PALAK / PALA WETLAND :
Palak Dil or Pala Tipo is the largest and biggest lake in Mizoram, northeast India. It is located near Phura village in Saiha district, within the Mara Autonomous District Council in the southern most district of Mizoram. Its geographical location falls under the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, and is therefore rich in animal and plant species. The lake is a major component of the Palak Wildlife Sanctuary, and it supports the major biodiversity of the sanctuary.
Pala is derived from a mythical Mara story for the name of the lake while tipo means “lake”; it is called Palak Dil in Mizo
Pala Wetland is the largest natural wetland in the state of Mizoram. The Site includes a relatively deep lake (over 16 metres deep on average) and its surrounding forest catchment area which climbs to almost 600m above sea level. The wetland supports a rich diversity of animal species, including at least seven mammals, 222 birds, 11 amphibians and 21 reptiles. The low-lying marshy areas within the wetland provide excellent habitat for many herbivores such as sambar deer (Cervus unicolor), wild pig (Sus scrofa) and barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak). Various species of primate also inhabit the wetland, such as the endangered Hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) and Phayre’s leaf monkey (Trachypithecus phayrei). Pala Wetland is revered by the local Mara people and has a deep connection with their history. The wetland is the major source of freshwater and fish for the villages.
It offers beautiful destination for nature lovers and birders. Mizoram Government run Lodge is there for travellers and a beautiful Forest Lodge made of Bamboo is available for a budget stay.
CASTLE OF BEINO :
One of the most beautiful and mesmerising works of nature along the bank of the river Chhimtuipui. It is an ideal place for white river rafting. Accommodation on hire of tent is available.
LOMASU :
The beautiful shorelines along the river Chhimtuipui, close to Indo Myanmar border. One can paddle boats up the river, Chill out with a bottle of beer, on the soil of Myanmar. Just to let you know.. Its a free visa/passport entry for a day. Tent available for rent for accommodation.
TLANGPUI :
The mesmerising Mountain above Siaha Town, the capital of Mara Autonomous District Council. If you happen to visit during winter, one can witness the spectacular blooms of Cherry Blossom, and the beautiful town of Saiho below.
VISIT TO CHAKHEI & SIATA:
Visit to Chakhei & Siata village, just 70 km from Saiha, the Capital of Siaha District. It lies on a higher elevation and the weather is chilly. Siata is a village, whose main occupation is, rearing Mithun, and it is one of the very few village, in Mizoram, rearing such animals fruitfully. It is also home to the “Mawma”, the highest Mountain in Siaha District.
